С.В. Кривовичев выступает руководителем ряда научных исследований в рамках программ Российского научного фонда, Российского фонда фундаментальных исследований, Федеральных целевых программ, международных научных и образовательных проектов.

29 декабря 2015 года стал профессором РАН, а 28 октября 2016 года был избран членом-корреспондентом РАН по Отделению наук о Земле.
7 июля 2017 года избран на должность Председателя Кольского научного центра РАН.
